Abstract
The curve generated by the motion of a point on the circumference of a wheel rolling on a flat surface is the cycloid, also known for its mechanical properties as the brachistochrone and the tautochrone, and also described by one mathematics historian as an apple of discord and by others as the Helen of geometry—beautiful, but the source of warfare.
