Abstract

Abstract In Session 11, problem-solving, a key cognitive behavioral therapy skill, is taught as a general coping skill to use instead of drinking or using drugs to avoid dealing with problems. Women-specific vignettes and examples of a problem-solving procedure are provided, and the skill is practiced in session via exercises using the handouts and worksheets. Letting go of situations and people identified as being “not in my control” is discussed as a step in problem-solving. Tools such as acceptance and mindful awareness are incorporated in the problem-solving strategy menu. As in every session, prior skills are carried forward, each client’s abstinence plan is monitored, routine interventions are delivered, and group support is encouraged.
