Abstract When we interpret statistics, we inevitably incorporate our personal knowledge and philosophical preferences. All statisticians therefore need to understand the philosophical foundation of probability and statistics, say Yudi Pawitan and Youngjo Lee – and puzzles and paradoxes can help
