Abstract
The landscape of serious illness continues to expand, and with that expansion, the specialty of palliative care is challenged to explore its limits and boundaries while designing innovative approaches to meet the needs of patients, families, and providers. This introduction invites reflection on the opportunities and challenges implicit in the imperative of providing access to palliative care for all people with serious illness. It serves to create context for the chapters that follow in exploring how palliative care principles and practices can be tailored to the nuances and complexities across multiple conditions, diagnoses, and settings.
