Abstract
Abstract
This chapter reviews the emergency presentation of colorectal disease. Sections describe the diagnosis and treatment of appendicitis, Meckel’s diverticulum, obstruction of the small and large bowel, GI bleeding, colonic perforation, and trauma of both the colon and rectum. For this new edition the section has been revised to include recent evidence on antibiotic therapy for acute appendicitis. Information is presented in a format that allows rapid access to the salient points for the emergency surgical practitioner. For ease of reference each section is set out in a similar way, starting with presentation or aetiology, moving on to investigation and/or clinical features, ending with management of the condition.
