Abstract

Abstract This case examines the importance of recognizing, assessing, and effectively managing depression at the end of life. Depression is common in palliative populations, yet it is frequently underdetected and undertreated. Identifying depression is important because effective management can improve quality of life and relationships with others. Screening tools can be useful to recognize depressive symptoms amongst feelings of grief, sadness, and the biological symptoms relating to poor physical health. A bio-psycho-social approach is important for management. Medication and non-pharmacological treatments have been shown to be effective. When starting antidepressants, it is important to review frequently for side effects and effectiveness and titrate to a therapeutic dose as quickly as is safely possible.
