Abstract
This chapter opens with a discussion about classes and mechanisms of antiretroviral agents. The mechanisms of action of the traditional versus newer antiretroviral classes are reviewed as well as the five major categories of antiretroviral agents. Key characteristics and findings of recent clinical trials involving the regimens recommended by the US Department of Health and Human Services are reported. The chapter concludes with a discussion about what is on the horizon for antiretroviral therapy.
