Nausea and Vomiting

Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides an overview of the assessment and management of nausea and vomiting and data on their prevalence for the adult population. The chapter reviews comprehensive symptom assessment that focuses on describing the patient’s experience and an understanding of the physiological pathways of nausea and vomiting, and their common etiologies, including bowel obstruction. It concludes with a review of the evidence base for management strategies, including patient education, lifestyle changes, selected integrative therapies, and a review of the mechanisms of action of antiemetics. This chapter can guide general pediatric palliative advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) practice considerations but it is not inclusive of specialty pediatric antiemetic care plans.
