Abstract

Abstract This chapter starts with an outline of the history of global initiatives to protect the human rights of people with psychotic illness. This is followed by an overview of three major approaches: legislative reform, community-based mental healthcare, and advocacy. We consider the opportunities and challenges presented by these approaches, specifically in relation to psychosis. The final section describes innovations to address human rights abuses in low-resource settings and three case studies illustrating different approaches including the reform of mental health legislation in Ghana, mental health service user advocacy in Indonesia, and recovery-focused interventions and peer support in Uganda.
