Abstract
Abstract
Neurodevelopmental disorders are disorders of brain development and lifelong with early age of onset. They are distinct from acquired brain disorders resulting from trauma. To make these diagnoses, problems applying key academic skills to learning have an onset during the developmental period and must have persisted for at least 6 months despite targeted interventions. Such learning impairments, if not treated, increase the later risk for emotional and behavior disorders. Academic impairments may involve reading, spelling, mathematics, and written expression. This chapter reviews the history, epidemiology, definition and classification, assessment, etiology (genetics and neuroimaging), comorbid psychiatric disorders and treatment for impairments in reading, hyperlexia, spelling, mathematics, and written expression.
