Abstract

Abstract Spirituality and religion are not synonymous. The former is described as that aspect of life that gives it its ‘humanness’ while the latter is concerned with socially and traditionally shared beliefs and experience, including personal and subjective dimensions. Both play a significant role in many cultures. Although some religious beliefs are not conducive to the inclusion of people with disabilities and their families in society’s mainstream, spirituality has been widely seen to play important roles in the lives of many people with intellectual disability and their families. This chapter examines the approaches to intellectual disability and social inclusion within the world’s major religious faiths.
