Oral cavity and oropharyngeal cancer

Abstract

This chapter discusses the management of oral and oropharyngeal cancer. It outlines relevant anatomical and epidemiological aspects. Investigation, staging, and treatment principles are discussed. The ablative and reconstructive surgical aspects of care are considered along with the role of treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Minimally invasive procedures in the treatment of oropharyngeal cancers are also considered in the context of emerging techniques. Although the chapter focuses on squamous cell carcinoma, less common pathologies that affect the oral cavity and oropharynx are also considered. Allied healthcare support in the care of these patients is discussed and quality of life in both curative and palliative patients is considered.
