Abstract

Abstract The pharynx extends from the base of the skull to the inferior border of the cricoid cartilage. It serves as a common channel for both swallowing and respiration. The internal pharynx consists of the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx, and is innervated by various branches of the external carotid artery. Pharyngeal function is decreased in anesthetized patients. The anesthesiologist should evaluate the anatomy of the airway, including the pharynx, to determine whether the patient is at risk for a difficult intubation.
