Abstract
One of the most striking features of the weather layers on Jupiter and Saturn are the bands of intense east–west winds that alternate in direction with latitude. It has long been appreciated that these east–west winds are a result of an interplay between turbulence and Rossby waves, although the precise details of that interplay are still disputed. These zonal winds, and their relationship to Rossby waves, are discussed in some detail in this chapter. This remains an area of intense research, as increasingly accurate astrophysical measurements fuels an ongoing debate.
