Abstract
Tornadoes, waterspouts (tornadoes over water), dust devils, and tidal vortices are the four most striking examples of columnar vortices that can be found in the atmosphere and in the oceans. This chapter reviews the observational evidence as to the structure of these vortices, while discussing the conditions under which they form. The evidence in support of vortex breakdown in tornadoes and waterspouts is also examined. Despite almost a century of research, these vortices remain poorly understood, with very little in the way of a predictive theory.
