Abstract
Whereas other chapters are about finding, following, and managing callings amid difficulties, the book concludes by focusing on how to give callings up. With relinquished callings, people have found a calling and committed themselves to it, whether briefly or for years, and now must give it up. The chapter explores the difficulties of relinquishing callings in retirement and other times of life such as stepmothering, illness, and lost pregnancies. The chapter is organized around the movement from relinquishment and renunciation to reorientation and relief. It considers the necessary and frequently overlooked place of lament, the role of humility, and the dynamics of refashioning one’s life (“falling upward”) and discovering fresh callings ahead.
