Two Final Objections

Abstract

AbstractThis chapter considers two final objections to the knowledge argument: one based on Quinean considerations; and one based on combining different objections. The Quinean strategy has versions that correspond to familiar strategies. The chapter argues that those versions face many of the same problems as their non-Quinean analogues, and that Quinean doctrines supply physicalists with no new resources for solving those problems. The chapter also argues that the prospects for hybrid strategies are poor. The hybrids that have been attempted have not proven any more viable than their component strategies, and there is no reason to think any alternative hybrid will fare better.
