Abstract
Abstract
This chapter focuses on how school counselors can engage upper elementary students in youth participatory action research (YPAR). The authors identify various theoretical bases for incorporating YPAR into school counseling and then describe initial steps school counselors can engage in prior to implementation, including transformative social–emotional learning, multicultural and social justice counseling competencies (MSJCC), cultural humility, and adultism. The authors offer considerations that school counselors must take into account as the adult facilitators of YPAR at the upper elementary level. They illuminate the application of YPAR at the upper elementary level via the illustration of a case study. Finally, they highlight some challenges that school counselors might encounter during implementation and propose different ways schools could overcome these barriers.
