Abstract
Abstract
For a population of bacteria to survive in a fluctuating environment, diversity at certain loci is an essential part of fitness. The potential for diversity at such loci actually can be inherited and selected. A single genome sequence can imply diversity at those loci through the evolution of sequences with a high mutation rate at such loci. We suggest the term “species genome” to encompass the full range of diversity implied by a bacterial genome.
