Abstract

Abstract The conclusion paraphrases the main arguments of the book. It reiterates the claim that posthuman cinema cannot be quarantined to a particular generic category, narrative formation, or set of stock figures. It further reiterates the claim that, rather than mourning or celebrating the demise of the human, critical posthumanism interrogates the very concept of the human. Finally, while granting critical posthumanism a powerful force as a tool of critique, it advocates for a form of critical posthumanism that maintains a healthy skepticism of posthumanism itself. In doing so, it presents Nomadland (Chloé Zhao, 2020) as a case study that both exemplifies the value of posthumanist analysis and foregrounds the risks of a critical posthumanism that is critical of everything except its own assumptions.
