Abstract

Abstract If the aim of critical theory is freedom, a critical theory of freedom from relations of colonization would involve a method of critique as a practice of encounter with the other, oriented toward the transformation of ourselves and our relations, guided by an ethos of freedom in relations of reciprocity. This method informs a practice of freedom from colonial unknowing through reparative encounters between Euro-American and Indigenous critical theories, and among a constellation of critical theories of resistance to multiple forms of domination. This is a method of critical theory as a practice both of and for freedom: a practice of critique that is both engaged in resistance and oriented toward an ideal of relational freedom emergent from our intersecting histories. This method draws on Black and Indigenous theories and politics of transformative justice and transformative resurgence, including Patrisse Cullors, Ruby Sales, and Dian Million, with Michel Foucault, Pierre Hadot, Eve Sedgwick, and Saba Mahmood.
