Abstract

Abstract Emerging adulthood is an important period for sexuality development. This chapter reviews trends in sexual behavior that show some consistency over time but also reveal new dynamics in how young adults experiment with various forms of casual sexual relationships. Hookups, friends-with-benefits relationships, and the use of social media all relate to current aspects of sexual behavior. This chapter employs feminist and queer theories to examine the ways gender, sexual agency, and fluidity in sexual identities impact emerging adults’ sexual behavior. As young adults explore new ways of expressing sexual and gender identities, they demonstrate the limitations imposed by heteronormativity and homonormativity. The chapter makes the case that fluidity in gender and sexual identities shapes the context for interpreting trends in sexual and relationship choices and behaviors.
