Abstract

Abstract This chapter explores the influence of using multiple channels of communication technology on modern friendships. The authors examine the effects of integrating multiple channels on relational processes, with a specific focus on supportive communication. Describing how multiple channels and their corresponding affordances shape the maintenance of friendships is a complex task that involves the consideration of affordances, relational characteristics, and aspects of the communicative context (i.e., supportive interactions). This chapter reviews research on contemporary friendships and their use of technology, followed by a consideration of how and why communicating through a variety of channels influences outcomes associated with supporting and maintaining friendships. By synthesizing literature from media multiplexity theory, the communication interdependence perspective, and perceived technological affordances, the authors review the current understanding of how friendships incorporate multiple channels and affordances. In doing so, they propose several theoretical possibilities for how aspects of technology are integrated to achieve intended relational outcomes.
