Abstract

Abstract This chapter develops and tests the first part of our two-step model for conflict by religious minorities—how discrimination, deprivation, and inequality (DDI) leads to grievances. While few disagree that DDI ought to lead to grievances, few actually test this proposition. This is because few studies actually measure grievances. We test this DDI-to-grievances relationship and find that DDI does lead to grievances, but there is considerable nuance in this finding regarding which types of DDI leads to which types of grievances. Other factors such as group capacity and group political power also influence this process.
