Abstract

Abstract This chapter draws the narrative of the preceding chapters together, pointing out how they describe an arc of development over time. The contents of each chapter are summarized and connected. Taken together, they suggest that the crucial process affecting historical culture in Iron Age Italy was the rise of urban society. We can see how Italians’ historical culture shifted from an ancestral temporality to a civic one, impelled by the long-term emergence of cities in the region. As this confirms, social transformations and the structure of society have everything to do with the particular modes and forms their historical interests take.
