Abstract
AbstractContrary to common perception, equality is an important value in classic Confucianism. By analyzing its views in the economic, moral, and political realms, this chapter demonstrates that, for the most part, the classic Confucian notion of equality can be characterized as proportional equality, which comes with apparent inequalities yet is built on a deep sense of equality and fairness. Ancient Confucian thinkers have offered rich resources for contemporary thinkers to construct a progressive conception of equality for a just society today. For each area of equality, this chapter also explores the implications of Confucian ideas of equality for contemporary society and suggests further work to be done toward the goal of social and political equality.
