Abstract
AbstractConfucianism has been associated closely with education throughout history. All major ancient Confucian thinkers were teachers. This final chapter explicates the Confucian philosophy of education. It first investigates the essential role of education in Confucian philosophy by elaborating on the Confucian concept of education in the context of developing humanity and its role in making well-rounded persons. It then examines the Confucian philosophy of education as a form of civic education in comparison with Amy Gutmann’s theory of democratic education in contemporary times. The chapter finally makes a case for the role of Confucian moral education in a multicultural society.
