Four Ways the Arts Can Help Social Work Be More Future Ready and Future Engaged

Abstract

Abstract Part IV considers the future and present of the social work profession and its relationship to the arts. Chapter 14 reflects on how social work is situated in a rapidly changing world where strengths and opportunities, as well as existential threats, are evolving at unprecedented speeds. Although social work is implicitly future-oriented, focused on creating a better, more equitable world, this chapter suggests that revamping its practices, theories, and frameworks is past due. The chapter explores two intersecting and interdisciplinary frameworks: (1) futures thinking-foresight practice to assist the profession in being less reactive, decidedly intentional, and more responsive to the complexities of contemporary society and (2) the intersection of futures thinking with the power of imagination and the arts. This scintillating exploration considers how social work must collaborate with diverse communities, interdisciplinary allies, and unfamiliar and disruptive ideas to co-create its future.
