Abstract
The topic of ‘weakness of will’, or akrasia, has aroused a great deal of discussion in recent years, among both contemporary philosophers and interpreters of Plato, who identify the Socratic position in the Protagoras as an explicit denial that such a phenomenon actually occurs. Yet it seems to be a commonplac<‘ even among the most renowned contemporary scholars to attribute to Plato, particularly in the Republic, a radical departure from the Socratic position expressed in the Protagoras.
