A Question of Identity

Abstract

Abstract Four dominant currents have characterized Iranian culture. they include the problematic of modernity; the role of the state as a crafter and influencer of culture; the role, nature, and influence of religion on popular beliefs, behavior, and the organization of society; and nationalism. Combined, these four elements have greatly shaped both the overall nature of Iranian society as well as state-society relations in the country.
