Abstract

AbstractIn this chapter, I analyze specific sets of V3 where the second constituent is the adverb sí “so” in Old Italian. This construction is used as a picklock to show that the type of V2 phenomenology found in this language is peculiar. Old Italian V2 is different from what has been assumed in the literature for Germanic, since it appears to obey pragmatic restrictions in addition to the well-studied syntactic ones. In order to show this, I analyze sí has a deictic component, as its etymological source suggests. As such, it can function as a resumptive adverb for scene-setting elements, in particular temporal and consecutive embedded clauses.
