Abstract
Abstract
This essay has a narrow aim: to answer all major criticisms, except two, of a kind of analysis of function statements previously offered by several writers. Let me call it a general goal-contribution (GGC) analysis, since it defines functions generally as causal contributions to goals. This analysis seeks to cover a wide range of functions, including ordinary ones in artifacts, biological ones in living organisms, and perhaps others as well, as in social science.
