Abstract

Abstract This chapter provides an overview of the central definitions and terminological distinctions of the concept of resource. It examines the adequacy of the Foas’ resource typology and raises the question of whether dimensions suggested by other theorists might be theoretically fruitful alternatives or complements to concreteness/particularism. Next, the chapter discusses the validity of some of the 15 exchange rules that the Foas formulated, as it seemed somewhat unclear how they were derived. Additional issues concern the production and acquisition of resources, how the way a resource is produced or acquired may affect attitudes toward the resource, and the ways in which this knowledge might affect exchange. The chapter is completed by short descriptions of some additional resource-related theories or models as well as various attempts at integration between social resource theory and other theoretical frameworks.
