In chapter 25, Balota, Dolan, and Duchek provide a comprehensive review of age-related memory decrements and the cognitive theories that have been developed in order to account for them. Our goal in this chapter is to put these findings and theories into a broader context. To facilitate this goal, we propose that the memory decrements shown by older people are mediated by a cascade of neurological and cognitive changes (see figure 26.1).
