Abstract
The final chapter considers how “The Exorcist effect” has been amplified by social media and considers what can be done to mitigate this situation. The chapter examines the QAnon conspiracy theory as the most recent manifestation of The Exorcist effect. Many of the claims made by QAnon draw on horror films. In particular, the idea that political elites torture children to harvest “adrenochrome” appears to be entirely derivative of films. The authors suggest that while The Exorcist effect has caused demonstrable harm, the answer should not be censorship or restricting the artistic freedom of filmmakers. Instead, efforts should be made to educate the public and foster higher levels of media literacy.
