Abstract
Abstract
Depression is a common illness worldwide and, as a consequence, is constantly present in the mass media. This chapter discusses the media strategies and representations of depression in three German newspapers in the period from 1951 to 2015. Following the tradition of linguistic discourse analysis, the author seeks to explore the means used to create a specific medial image of depression. To do so, narrative structures and discourse metaphors are analyzed, especially the use of the conceptual metaphors DEPRESSION IS A HEAVY BURDEN, DEPRESSION IS A FALL, and DEPRESSION IS DARKNESS. They are shown to express the inner, psychic experience of people with depression while also structuring the media discourse surrounding depression.
