Abstract
Abstract
Akira Hayami lays out in the introduction to this volume the broad historical specifics of the socioeconomic system of Tokugawa Japan, in which he sees the emergence of an “economy-minded society.” What kind of macroeconomic performance was produced in that process? We have only extremely limited data for macroeconomic figures of the Tokugawa period, so it is very difficult to get an accurate grasp of the details of Japan’s economic development, but we are able to obtain a general picture from the fragmentary data.
