Abstract
The Conclusion shows that the inauguration of the Theatro Municipal in 1909 was a crowning event at the closing of the first decade of the 20th century. The project took several years to come to fruition, but when the theater was finally opened, it represented the consolidation of an imagined future that was now concrete but already past. The section shows that chroniclers like João do Rio and Lima Barreto provided different views of the new theater’s role in the new city. Like many similar buildings around the world, the theater’s hermetically closed neoclassical walls were also soundproof to the city outside, which continued to echo an ever-changing musical world soon to be dominated by the sounds of a world war.
