Perceived Partner Responsiveness and Wellbeing

Abstract

Abstract Abundant evidence indicates that human wellbeing is affected by relationships more than by any other single factor. In this chapter, the authors propose that this association represents the influence of perceived partner responsiveness. This construct embodies several specific principles, namely that partners understand who we are as persons, respect and appreciate our abilities and viewpoints, and provide caring and support when needed. The chapter reviews existing evidence that points to the impact of perceived partner responsiveness on development, relationship wellbeing, and emotional and physical health. Although the presented model describes a process that characterises dyadic interaction, it also has wider implications for larger organisations and societies, which is discussed. Applications based on this model of perceived partner responsiveness offer novel opportunities for improving human wellbeing.
