Abstract

Abstract To feel cared for by others, to be caring of others, and to be caring of oneself are the foundations of wellbeing across its diverse conceptualisations. Importantly, central to caring is compassion, with compassion entailing not only the identification and alleviation of suffering but also its prevention. This chapter explores the evolution of caring behaviour and how it became a human source of compassion. The chapter considers how care and compassion are linked to a variety of psychophysiological processes that underpin wellbeing. In essence, wellbeing is rooted in the creation of caring connections with self and others, and the cultivation of caring and compassion are basic life motives on the road to personal and social wellbeing.
