Abstract

Abstract Chapter 3 conceptualizes a methodological approach that recognizes the difference and complexity from the position of the Other. To understand the methods used in social science by postcolonial scholars the chapter looks at different tools that critical discourse analysis (CDA) provides to show how Pakistan is Othered in the Western security discourse. Using insights from ethnography the chapter then moves on to focus on the colonial subject and consciousness, with particular emphasis on the role of the voice applied to the case of Pakistan asking if the Subaltern can speak in the global nuclear discourse. And finally, with these conceptual tools, it explores the power relations involved in conducting such research and writing it up. This means understanding in detail the methods and the researcher’s reflexivity.
