Abstract
In this chapter we begin the study of discontinuous solutions, satisfying the system of conservation laws in the distributional sense. In this case, no a priori regularity is required: for example, the set of points of discontinuity may well be everywhere dense.The qualitative properties of general weak solutions to the Cauchy problem with small BV initial data will be studied in Chapter 10.
