Abstract

Abstract This chapter reviews the methods used to measure and evaluate health outcomes. There are a number of different measures that economists have developed over the years to quantify the effectiveness of vaccines and immunization programs. Two of the most commonly used in cost-effectiveness analysis are quality-adjusted life years and disability-adjusted life years, in addition to more intuitive measures such as mortality and incidence rates in an at-risk population. The chapter explores these effectiveness measurements and the types of psychometric approaches that have been developed to derive estimates of effectiveness of vaccines and immunization programs.
