Policy Recommendations and Conclusion

Abstract

Abstract In this concluding chapter I argue that while there are opportunities for de-escalation in the Sino/U.S. and Sino/Indian strategic rivalries, there are also many opportunities for a continuation of the status quo and for increasing escalation. For each state involved there are policies that can be followed that would increase the chances of conflict. In the current situation I argue that the prospects of rivalry termination are very low. Rivalry termination does occur, but the conditions for such a termination are extremely low in the rivalries under review. In addition, this chapter provides a solid overview of the book and reinforces the book’s main argument that strategic rivalry is the primary driver of naval modernization in China and India.
