Abstract

Abstract This chapter summarises the findings discussed throughout this title. It reviews how conflict can encourage situations of modern slavery by creating two specific vulnerabilities: reducing the options available to a person, and causing a breakdown in their support networks. This chapter then highlights the importance of understanding agency and victimhood on a scale as opposed to as binary opposites before going on to identify the ways in which some UK policies exacerbate the risk of modern slavery by generating the same vulnerabilities as conflict. It emphasises the importance of investigating the interaction between structure and agency in facilitating situations of modern slavery, and concludes by offering recommendations as to how the findings from the research could be practically applied to reduce the risk of modern slavery.
