Abstract
AbstractThis chapter explains and promotes general music as holistic music education. A holistic music education is one that recognizes the interconnected and dynamic parts of the music experience and builds upon connections to the self, others, and the world outside the classroom. It also attends to the whole person and triggers connections, through music, between the mind (cognitive), the body (kinesthetic), and the spirit (affective). The four dimensions of music practice—creating, connecting, performing, responding—are used as essential elements for designing such a curriculum. These are explained and presented within a conceptual model. Finally, the chapter considers what it means to be a holistic music educator and describes how to navigate the book.
