Abstract
AbstractWhen students understand the music they hear, they can respond in thoughtful and creative ways. All students can develop analytical listening skills that lead to greater musical understanding, interaction, enjoyment, and music making. The purpose of this chapter is threefold: (1) to demonstrate the value of aural analysis in music education, (2) to offer a theoretical framework for inclusion of analysis in curriculum development, and (3) to provide applications in the general music classroom. The chapter concludes with lesson ideas designed to help primary and secondary school students know music better, through their ears, in relevant and lasting ways. The plans incorporate popular music, technology, and diverse cultural influences to reflect the rapidly evolving world in which students are experiencing music.
