Sexual dysfunction associated with isotretinoin treatment: A survey of UK and Irish dermatologists’ experience & approach to counselling & monitoring

Abstract

Isotretinoin is the most effective treatment for severe acne. There are rare reports of sexual dysfunction associated with isotretinoin, however a causal association has not been shown. In October 2023, the Medicines Health Regulation Authority (MHRA) published updated guidelines with new warnings and monitoring requirements for sexual dysfunction with isotretinoin. We conducted a survey of the experiences of isotretinoin prescribers in the UK & Ireland regarding sexual dysfunction during treatment and their practices around counselling and monitoring. We noted significant variance in counselling practices and opinions on the potential association between acute and longer-term sexual AEs and isotretinoin use.
