Five session CAT care planning approach

Abstract

Abstract The five session cognitive analytic therapy (CAT) care planning approach has been developed to offer a relational psychological intervention for clients with complex needs, and the multi-disciplinary teams working with them. Features of this approach include staying in the present (‘here and now’; rather than considering past experiences), the 24-hour clock exercise, and an informed use of psychotherapy file in order to develop a diagrammatic reformulation of the client’s difficulties to guide the development of a care plan going forward. The approach is well received by clients, team members, and psychologists. The evidence base is growing and demonstrates a range of potential benefits for clients and teams. However, more research is needed including a randomized control trial. Other research could consider in more depth the experience of those using the approach (particularly clients) to help scope further developments and focus future research questions. Longer term follow-up would also be beneficial.
