Abstract

Abstract Given that most dictatorships allow for contested national elections and legislatures, opposition often emerges in the form of organized parties and movements challenging the regime for control of political offices, policy, and spoils. This chapter reviews the literature on opposition in authoritarian legislatures and elections. It examines the types of decisions and dilemmas facing opposition leaders and followers, including whether to participate and how to participate in legislative and electoral institutions that are designed to perpetuate incumbent rule. While our understanding of the opposition in authoritarian institutions has advanced over the last several years, there remain several areas that require further investigation.
